Tim Ten Yen is the young, single, handsome, sensational Singing Salaryman, performing his own Karaoke Pop songs for you. He dresses daily in his smart suit, riding the underground as if going to work. Appearances are everything! He suspects his current status is far below that which future-Mrs Ten Yen aspires to - she deserves a good man with a good job at a good company. Tim Ten Yen is none of those things yet, so bides his time writing songs which he thinks she'll like. 'Runaround Getaround' is one of those songs, which succeeds his valiantly acclaimed 'Girl Number One' single and a cheery split 7" with Shimura Curves and precedes the release of his debut album 'Everything Beautiful Reminds Me Of You' on Pointy Records on September 1st. Happily, 'Runaround Getaround' is indeed a single you can 'sing'.
Because Tim Ten Yen sings Karaoke Pop, and he is not being ironic. "Karaoke Pop music [with a capital 'K' & 'P'] has a genuine heart to it," Mr Yen explains, "It's not dispensable, it's essential. Karaoke Pop doesn't sound quite like anything that's come before it, but is also strangely reassuring. And makes you want to wave your arms, dance and sing along, even if it's not being sung in your native tongue."
Some onlookers have surmised that Tim Ten Yen sometimes comes across like Jarvis Cocker pretending to be David Tennant acting out Dr Who. Like the good Doctor, Tim Ten Yen has a companion. His is in the shape of an animatronic cat, The Sinister Cat. This companion is no ordinary cat. The Sinister Cat is all about magic and confidence and, sitting on the speaker at live shows and in his studio the cat gives Tim Ten Yen the confidence to go out and be who he is. He explains more: "The cat makes me feel safe – he is a guardian angel, a mystical dragon that has special powers. The Sinister Cat is my right hand man and helps me keep what I do pure. By seeing him looking sinister, he keeps me on the straight and the narrow."
Tim Ten Yen has been recording and performing in London for the last couple of years. Armed with a tape of backing tracks and a tiny keyboard he has, in turn, wooed and baffled the crowds of the London underground, Leeds Festival, Iceland and beyond. These crowds have not always expected a man in a suit to come out and entertain them but Tim suggests this is part of the appeal in his quest to bring heartfelt, world-saving pop music to the masses: "If I'm on the defensive I would maybe over-react and say that what I'm doing could be as difficult as Radiohead. Genuinely happy music is hard to write - there are so many easy pitfalls to fall into. Just like punk rock, you have to be true to yourself to get it spot-on, and not listen to anyone telling you how you should be doing it."
Because Tim Ten Yen is the ULTIMATE writer, the ULTIMATE performer, the ULTIMATE pop star! Leading you through your dreams then out the other side, with just the Sinister Cat, a smoke machine and some fancy dance moves for company. THIS is karaoke at its best and, some say, most exhilarating.
